Drone wind limits, model by model
The most wind each drone is rated for, from the maker's spec sheet, and how close to it you can fly.
| Drone | Weight | mph | km/h | m/s |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DJI Neo | 135 g | 18 | 29 | 8 |
| DJI Neo 2 | 151 g | 24 | 39 | 10.7 |
| DJI Flip | <249 g | 24 | 39 | 10.7 |
| DJI Mini 3 | 248 g | 24 | 39 | 10.7 |
| DJI Mini 4 Pro | <249 g | 24 | 39 | 10.7 |
| Potensic ATOM 2 | <249 g | 24 | 38 | 10.6 |
| DJI Mini 5 Pro | 249.9 g | 27 | 43 | 12 |
| DJI Avata 2 | 377 g | 24 | 39 | 10.7 |
| DJI Air 3 | 720 g | 27 | 43 | 12 |

| Autel EVO II Pro V3 | 1,191 g | 27 | 43 | 12 |
| DJI Inspire 3 | 4,310 g | 31 | 50 | 14 |
From each maker's spec page. The Inspire 3 is rated 14 m/s in flight and 12 m/s for takeoff and landing, the EVO II Pro V3 12 m/s in flight and 10.7 m/s for takeoff and landing.
What the number means
It's the steady wind the drone can hold its position against. DJI calls 10.7 m/s "Level 5", the top of a fresh breeze on the Beaufort scale, when small trees in leaf start to sway.
Gusts matter more than the average. A gust over the limit can push the drone farther than it can fly back, and the drone has the least power to spare on the way home, into the wind, on a low battery.
How close to the limit you can fly
Leave a margin for gusts the forecast doesn't catch. Good to Fly says Fly with care once gusts reach 70% of your drone's limit and Stay grounded at 90%. For a Mini 4 Pro, that's 17 mph (27 km/h) and 22 mph (35 km/h).
Check the wind where the drone flies
Weather apps give the wind at 33 ft (10 m). At 400 ft (120 m) it's often 50% stronger, and twice as strong over towns or in the still air of early morning. A calm forecast can still put a Mini over its limit up high. How much stronger, by terrain.
Fly upwind first
Head into the wind at the start, while the battery is full. The trip back is then downwind, and the drone gets home even if the wind picks up.
